Frequently Asked Questions About Pagers

How does a pager work?
Having a pager is like having your own personal radio receiver. When your pager gets a radio signal coded for your pager, it displays a message. Someone who calls the telephone number assigned to your pager originates the message. By following voice-prompts or operator instructions, the caller leaves a message. The message is then digitized via computer and broadcast via transmitters to your pager.

Where can I receive messages on my pager?
Almost anywhere. You just need to be within range of a transmitter. For a more specific answer, check your plan coverage.

What kind of information can I receive with my pager?
Anything that can be digitized can be transmitted over the newest wireless messaging networks, including photos, spreadsheets and graphics. Whether the information can be displayed once you get it depends on the king of pager you've got.

Is it more expensive to receive a page long-distance?
Most plans charge a flat monthly rate that does not distinguish between local and long distance pages.

Can I be paged nationally, or internationally?
Check your plan. Under most plans, this would incur an additional charge.

How will I be charged?
Most plans offer unlimited paging for a designated flat fee, up to a certain number of pages or characters.

Is a pager a better deal than a wireless PCS/Cellular phone?
Local paging costs a few dollars a month, while basic wireless phone service can cost four times that much. And if you add usage and roaming charges and the cost of batteries, the difference in cost is even more dramatic.

Is pager technology advancing at all?
Absolutely. Today's pagers are slick and slim tech machines. Message content had advanced to allow you to get information - like e-mail and stock quotes - on your pager. And the beep is better - many pagers now play melodic tones, and most offer to switch over to a silent vibration.

Do I have to buy the pager separately?
Yes for Numeric pagers. Should you decide on an AlphaNumeric, you will have your choice of rental or purchase. Choose from among state-of-the-art pagers selected to work with each of the Canpage plans.

Why does my pager not go off sometimes?

Pagers are affected by terrain, weather conditions, building construction, stray radio transmissions (such as garage door openers, commercial TV and Radio transmitters, and other sources of radio energy), condition of your battery, even the position of your pager.

If you're in a fringe area, these factors are even more pronounced. (You've probably noticed how a signal on a portable radio is affected, sometimes simply by rotating the radio, or moving it a few inches can make a big difference in radio reception.).

It's also possible that there is an intermittent problem with the paging transmitter in your area, or that your pager may need to be adjusted.

It's usually best to contact our customer service department, which may know of geographical problems, and who may recommend a frequency change for better sensitivity or saturation. If your pager needs any adjustment or repair, they can provide that service as well.

Does it make sense to have both a pager and a wireless phone?

Many on-the-run entrepreneurs have both, because a pager allows you to screen your cell phone calls. If an incoming call is worth incurring a wireless phone charge, you can return the call right away. If not, you can wait until you have access to a regular phone.

Is pager technology advancing at all?

Absolutely. Today's pagers are slick and slim high tech machines. Message content has advanced to allow you to get word messages -- like e-mail and stock quotes -- on your pager. And the beep is better - many pagers now play melodic tones, and most allow you to switch over to a silent vibration.

Do I have to buy the pager separately?

Yes. Choose from among the state-of-the-art pagers selected to work with each of the Canpage plans.

There are so many pagers to choose from. How do I pick one, and how do I know I'm getting good value?

Finding the right pager depends on how you want to use it. For example, do you want to be paged locally, regionally or anywhere in the country? Do you want to receive telephone numbers only, or text messages of several lines? Do you want a customized greeting for callers? Do you want to store phone numbers or voice messages? When shopping, these choices will affect the price. Just be sure to compare the same features when you are comparing prices.
